Fara Faust, instructional technology specialist at Alanton Elementary School, was declared CodeVA’s 2018 Computer Science Educator of the Year at a ceremony in Richmond, Dec. 3, kicking off Computer Science Education Week in Virginia. Faust was given the award by Virginia’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. James Lane, who called her “one of the most amazing computer science teachers in the state.”

Chris Dovi is executive director of CodeVa, a non-profit organization that promotes computer science education in Virginia. He praised Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) for being on the forefront of using technology to incorporate computer science and coding into curriculum. He said there were more than 20 educators nominated from across the state, but the choice for this year’s Educator of the Year was pretty clear.

“Fara is a phenomenal teacher whose combination dedication, infectious enthusiasm and inspired creativity is something I wish we could clone a thousand times over for every school in the state. The kids at Alanton Elementary are lucky to have Ms. Faust.”

Faust was nominated by Alanton Elementary School Library Media Specialist Heather Thomas.
